Where Will You "Spend" Eternity?

"What will it be?
What will it be?
Where will you spend your eternity.
What will it be, O' what will it be?
What will your answer be?"

Many times we have sung that song as a song of invitation at the close of a service.  However, I doubt that we have ever seriously answered the question we sing, "Where will you spend your eternity?"  The answer is "we will not spend eternity anywhere."

Now please do not misunderstand me, I am not saying that there is no such things as heaven, hell or eternity.  What I do wish to point out is that eternity cannot be spent.

Webster defines to "spend" as follows: to pay out; expend, wear out; exhaust; to consume wastefully; to cause or permit to elapse.  You see it is impossible to "spend" eternity.  We will not be able to expend, exhaust or watch eternity elapse.  It will simply go on forever and ever and ever.

I am not simply nit-picking but I mention these things in order to make two points.

First, we can rejoice at the fact that if faithful to God, we will be raised to the resurrection of life (John 5:28,29) to live eternally with Him.  We will be privileged to live in a state of bliss and blessing with God that will never end because eternity cannot be spent.

In the second place, considering eternity cannot be exhausted, we ought to strive to live in such a way that we will not find ourselves in the condition the majority will find themselves in -- eternal punishment (Matthew 7:13,14).  If such could be "spent" or exhausted the thought might be bearable, but since God's punishment of the wicked will never end, let us strive to be all the more faithful (Matthew 25:41,46); 1 Cor. 15:58).

"What will it be?
Where will you dwell eternally?
What will it be, O' what will it be?
What will your answer be?"
