Some Thoughts on Being a Christian
Christianity is the greatest life (John 10:10). Within the confines of a relationship with God is everything a person could desire. In this arrangement purpose for living is found (1 Cor. 10:31; Isa. 43:7). Also love, joy, peace, contentment and guidance abounds. With this life comes obligation. Those who choose to follow the supreme Savior must understand this. What does it mean to be a Christian? Let us consider some of the following points
- Being a Christian means Responsibility: Every Christian is responsible to His Lord in regard to his actions and conduct. As a members of the body of Christ, every Christian is obligated to carry out the Lords command in going forth and preaching the gospel to every creature (Mt. 28:19,20; Mk. 16:15,16). He is responsible to exert the proper influence (Mt. 5:16). He is obligated to live his life in accordance to the will of His Lord (Col. 3:17).
- Being a Christian means Walking in the Footsteps of the Savior
: Jesus has left us the perfect example (1 Pet. 2:21). Every Christian should strive to emulate his example, living as he lived, thinking as he thought, serving as he served (1 John 2:6; Phil. 2:5). It is in this way that we grow in His grace and knowledge (2 Pet. 3:18).
- Being a Christian means Loving Others More than Yourself
: Jesus said that we are to love others as he loved us (John 13:34,35). True joy comes when Jesus is first in your life, Others second, and Yourself last. This is brings about real JOY.
- Being a Christian means Standing Up for what is Right
: The Bible teaches that we must "wage the good warfare" (1 Tim. 1:18), "fight the good fight of faith" (1 Tim. 6:12), "contend earnestly for the faith" (Jude 3), defend the gospel (Phil. 1:16,17) and "be ready always to give a defense" (1 Peter 3:15). The Bible teaches that we must stand up for Jesus. We must not only sing it but also live it.
- Being a Christian means putting Christs Kingdom first: As a Christian my top priority must be my service to God in His Kingdom. I cannot allow anything to come between this pursuit and me (Mt. 6:24). When the saints meet, I will be there because this is a priority (Heb. 10:25). When work in the Kingdom need to be done I will willingly volunteer because this is my charge (1 Cor. 15:58).
"For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21) |
Unless we understand what it means to be a Christian, our life will never have meaning. Christianity is a life of responsibility and obligation. However, the responsibility we are privileged to carry out is not burdensome but a joy (1 John 5:3). What a joy to be a child of the King. What a blessing to know that if I continue to walk with Him I will arrive at the proper destination. What does it mean to be a Christian? It means everything! Know what I mean?
