Heavenly Wisdom

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." These inspired words from James 1:5 should be followed by every child of God. In this world of confusion and unrest, heavenly wisdom is a vital key to a fulfilled life. Solomon, when given the opportunity to ask anything of God, chose wisdom to govern his people (1 Kings 3:5-12). We should also seek the wisdom of God. In James 3:13-18, we see a contrast between heavenly wisdom and worldly wisdom.

James in verse 13 poses the question, "Who is wise and understanding among you?" Those of the world, believe that wisdom is to be used for personal gain. Worldly wisdom is described by James as earthly, sensual and demonic. It is bitter, envious, and self-seeking. This wisdom extols as virtues such qualities as power, position, privilege and prestige. It is this kind of wisdom that prompted Satan to rebel against God. It was this type of wisdom that led the Apostles to argue over who would be the greatest in the kingdom.

In contrast, heavenly wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, submissive, merciful, impartial and without hypocrisy. It is this wisdom that led Jesus to the cross. It is this wisdom that governed the lives of Stephen, Paul and Timothy. Heavenly wisdom is about others and not self. It is about pleasing God and not man.

The products of earthly wisdom are confusion, envy and evil. In contrast the products of heavenly wisdom are peace, good fruit and righteousness. If we examine these with an honest heart, we will all conclude that the wisdom from above is far superior to the wisdom of the earth.

What type of wisdom governs our lives? We need to heed the advice of James and pray for the wisdom that comes from God and His word.
