Speaking the Truth in Love

You Are There!

See the source imageI vividly remember reading a magazine article about the imminent advent of affordable cell phone technology. By 1995 or so, Americans would be able to carry phones in their pockets. These phones, via satellite communications, would work anywhere in the world.

This prediction proved fairly accurate. Cell phones do work almost everywhere. They interrupt business meetings, romantic dinners, weddings, funerals, graduation ceremonies, and worship services. One time I was teaching a midweek Bible class, and a sister on the back row actually took a call: “Hello? Sorry, I’m at church right now. I’ll call you back later.”

See the source imageCell phone service isn’t perfect, though. Calls drop in rural areas or inside sturdily constructed buildings. They also provide poor service if not properly charged. And, as you may have noticed, cell phones are worthless when left home on the kitchen counter.

The Bible tells of a form of communication that works far better. No handheld devices, batteries, chargers, towers, or satellites required. Unlimited minutes. No fees. No dropped calls.

See the source imageThe One receiving our calls has the power to be wherever he chooses – and at all times. David says, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me” (Ps. 139:7-10). Do you have an emergency? Put in a call. David says that “when the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears” (34:17). Or maybe you just want to talk with someone who really cares. Go ahead! Get on your knees and send up your call. It’ll go through every time. God guarantees it.
